Description
Taylor, Smith & Taylor began at the turn of the twentieth century in Chester, West Virginia. At its height, TS&T employed around 500 people, making dinnerware, hotel ware, toilet sets, and specialty pieces. The toilet sets and specialty pieces (spittoons, cracker jars, pickle crocks, etc.) were discontinued after the 1910s. In turn, the company became one of the leading producers of semi-vitreous dinnerware, sold in department, five-and-dime, by mail order, and even in grocery and hardware stores. Taylor, Smith & Taylor pieces were an everyday staple in many American households during the mid-century years. The company was purchased by nearby Anchor Hocking in 1972 and continued to produce dinnerware until 1981. The West Virginia plant was demolished in 2012.This decorative oval-covered casserole dish was introduced in the 1950s as an example of "Mamie pink.” First Lady Mamie Eisenhower adored pink and many items were made in that color during the 1950's. The sides of the casserole sweep upward to form tab handles and expose the delicate pink center in the interior. Inside, the dish has 4 columns to support the sweeping dim lid with brass handle. The casserole itself is a creamy white with a delicate design of pink flowers and gray leaves.
Because of the metal knob on the lid, this item should not be used in the microwave. The dish is 10.25 x 7 inches (26.5 x 18 cm) and lid 8 x 6.5 inches (21 x 17 cm). It is about 2.75 inches deep (7.5 cm), about the size of 1 ½ quart casserole. It is in excellent, pristine condition, and appears never to have been used. Free shipping in the US.
